A Word on Tube Amps

It has been said that tube amps are finicky things for purists only, needing frequent bias adjustment etc. Tube replacement is very expensive and once the tubes wear out, they can be hard to find making the experience of owning a tube amp more a labour than a pleasure.  That may be true of some tube amps, but none of the above applies to the tube amps we sell.  To own and operate an Ideal Innovations or Glow audio tube amp is essentially the same as owning a solid state amp.  These amps run for years without needing tube replacement, and when it is time to replace tubes, they are inexpensive and usually easy to find.  Ideal Innovations amps and Glow Audio are self biasing, and if you can change a light bulb, you can change a tube.  So there is now no excuse to not invest in the superior sonics of a well designed tube amp like the Ideal Innovations or Glow Audio.

Ideal Innovations

Elite 40 SE (shown in black)

Where can you find a Canadian built 10 watt RMS per channel SET tube amp for this kind of money? It is able to drive many types of speakers.  One could swear they are listening to a much more powerful amp.  With the Omega Super 5 Monitor or Super 3i Monitor the sound is refined, warm and detailed with tight, deep and fast bass.  The inner detail is eery, exposing layers of information.  The Hoyt Bedford speakers would also be a shoe in for this amp.  For that matter, any reasonably efficient speaker would likely work well. The build quality is summed up in three words: like a tank.  Essentially built to last a lifetime.  It can be run like an integrated amp or as a power amp with separate pre amp.  Pictured here is the basic version of this amp which has one input, and volume controls for left and right.  Options include: headphone jack, multiple inputs with selector, volume control with balance control.....just to name a few.  Contact us for details.  Another nice bonus which we don’t take for granted is the superb packing and instruction manual.  In my many years in audio, I have not encountered a better value.

Specs: Power Output Tubes: 6AV5GA - A very well manufactured military tube, made in the USA, by Sylvania in Emporium, Pennsylvania in 1984.  They are a very robust design with cathodes as large as  KT88’s.  From info we have gathered these are actually 6FW5's labeled as 6AV5GA's.  Originally made for demanding military applications, these ideal power tubes provide unrivalled sonic performance in the correct audio circuit.  We are amazed at the speed of these tubes.

Driver Tubes: 12AX7WA's.  Some Elite xx versions may use 6N2P-EV  (6H2n-EB) a very high quality, excellent sounding, near 12AX7 equivalent.

Audio Power Output: 10 Watts RMS per channel both channels driven simultaneously.
Frequency Response:  20 Hz to 22 KHz plus or minus 1.0dB.
Input Sensitivity: 1.8 volt RMS signal will provide full output.
Input Impedance: 100K Ohms.
Output Impedance: 8 Ohms.
Hum and Noise: Less than 1.5 millivolts or minus 56dBv on the output jacks.

Price: $1199  Warranty: 1 year including tubes.

Elite 80 (shown with optional wood base)

How can such a thing be?  A 20 watt per channel RMS push pull tube amp, made in Canada using Hammond power supply and output transformers (the Elite 40 SE below also uses Hammond too) and American made NOS tubes and built like a tank?  Add to that, a sound quality that leaves one in utter disbelief.....all for a $song?  Such a thing is accomplished by leaving all frills out and concentrating on the one thing that counts, the sound.  Simple, but very solid construction, simple circuitry, and small production runs make this amp affordable.  They are hand built with no compromise in quality, but wood trim and more features can be added as options.  This amp is fast, clear, detailed, fluid, with a bottom end that is nothing short of astounding. Most people will likely put this amp with budget quality speakers which will no doubt make them sound incredible, but this amp will not be out of place in more illustrious company.  It makes all Omegas and Hoyt-Bedfords do things we never dreamed, and it will be at home with a huge variety of speakers.  The best bargain in an amp we have discovered so far.

A21 Series 2 Pure Class A Amplifier

(tube sound without the tubes)

Sugden's first commercial amplifier was the A21 in the mid-1960s. It is generally recognized as the first commercial, solid state Pure Class A amplifier to be available for audio enthusiasts. It was a very special amplifier with a single-ended Class A output configuration and current feedback. This design concept did not appear generally in commercial audio amplifiers until over a decade later. Capable of recreating a musical performance well in advance of its peers, it made the name of Sugden synonymous with musical performance. The true potential of the output configuration was realized in the 1980s when it was coupled to modern components, reduced internal filtering and multi emitter solid state output devices.

The result was an amplifier of extended and more controlled bass and treble but still retaining the wonderfully detailed mid range of the original design. The amplifier became the A21a, a reference amplifier on many continents. Further improvements have achieved significant enhancement of performance and the amplifier has been renamed the Sugden A21a Series 2.

If you love the sound of a well designed tube amp without the tubes, you will love this amp - clear and beautiful midrange, fluid top end, controlled tight bass, and very 3D.  A perfect match for ANY Omega or Hoyt-Bedford speaker and one of our favourite amps - tube or solid state.  A true classic.

Parasound

Z Series

Ever since we started Audio Boutique we have always wanted some extremely good solid state gear in our desktop line up.  Our criteria for carrying a product line, is not only the product itself, but the supplier too.  We believe we have achieved both, and look forward to a long term relationship with Parasound.  Sadly the world of desktop audio is synonymous with cheap powered speakers and mass market equipment that is good for MP3 and not much more, but the size of computer hard drives today leaves no excuse to run anything but CD quality and up.  We have the gear to take advantage of higher resolution files.  Also our gear is very flexible with no “all in one” components that limit upgrading and flexibility.

To give perspective as to how compact the Z-Series equipment is, the pictures above amply show.

In behind the 21” iMac are tucked a Zpre2 pre-amp, Zamp V.3 45 w/ch power amp, and DAC, all on a very compact 36” wide by 30” deep desktop.  The amp is not class D, T, or chip, but classic class A/B with linear toroidal power supply.  Basically what you would find in high end gear.  The versatile Z Series will work on a desktop, small room or big room, and the Zamp V.3 can be bridged mono to double power.

What really attracts us about the Z-Series is the sound.  It does not sound like average class A/B.

It is liquid in it’s presentation and presents a very three dimensional soundstage, not to mention very convenient to run, including a remote.  Also, the Z-Series has been on the market for a number of years, with Parasound upgrading instead of replacing.  No planned obsolescence here.  Also they are continually adding to this delightful little series with the likes of a CD/MP3 player/pre amp, a phono A to D converter, and a DAC.  Affordable lifestyle gear at it’s best!   Available in silver or black.

Here is a company that specializes in amplifiers and digital sources, doesn’t change their product line every year, are beautifully made with a host of convenient features, have products that range from entry level to high end and.....the reason we have picked up the entire line?  THE SOUND.

Dynamic, punchy, liquid, palpable, and threee deee.  Some of the best solid state we have encountered.

We sell all three lines of Parasound: Z-Series half rack size, New Classic, and Halo.  We are not going to publish a bunch of specs, but instead suggest you visit the excellent Parasound website.

Parasound fills the hole in our line up for stellar solid state gear at affordable prices.  It will work well with all the speakers we carry, even the picky ones.

New Classic and Halo

If you are looking to put together an absolutely stellar stereo system or multi channel home theatre system these two well established lines from Parasound have you covered.  They need no introduction as they are classics in the audio world.  A first choice for two channel stereo and home theatre.  Too many reviews to add all the links.  Please go to our links page and visit the Parasound website, as they have links to many great reviews.

Please read the following:

How Parasound Prevents Home Theatre Obsolescence
                           While Maximizing Performance & Value

Most people considering the purchase of a new home theatre or an upgrade have a well-justified fear of obsolescence. The home theatre industry's ever changing technology circus causes buyers to put off purchasing, often permanently. People won't buy when they fear obsolescence. The constant stream of new technologies and features is confusing. People won't buy when they're confused.

Unfortunately, this trend will continue because of frequent HDMI revisions and the strategy AVR manufacturers have adopted to compete with each other. The AVR manufacturers' business model emulates the fashion industry: Create new interest in a product line simply because it is the newest and latest. They flood the market several times a year with new models touting the latest technology and features, regardless of how useful they are. For example: DTS™ 11 channel home theatre.

You can reasonably assume that most consumers are concerned with future obsolescence. We can give you peace of mind and a greater inclination to buy now with the following information:

An often overlooked fact is that AVR manufacturers base many of their inexpensive, low powered models on the same technology, features, and chip sets as their most powerful and expensive models. Different prices between AVR models are determined almost entirely by their output power, i.e. their amp stages (and perhaps another 20 superfluous DSP modes and networking options that few consumers will ever use). The vast majority of the time a lower priced AVR has everything that a typical user needs, except for real amplifier power.

May we suggest an inexpensive AVR and combine it with a top quality power amp that will transform the listening experience and virtually future proof a home theatre?  Then, if a new technology appears that you want, you can simply replace your present inexpensive AVR with an equally inexpensive new AVR. The Parasound power amp that makes the theatre sound so great is built for long life and can remain the heart of the system indefinitely.

Who wouldn't want this proposition? Why would you want to pay for the amp section of a higher priced AVR again and again over the years when you can pay for a separate power amp once?

Parasound  Halo A51:  250W x 5 @ 8Ω, 400W x 5 @ 4Ω

Parasound New Classic 5250 V.2:  250W x 5 @ 8Ω, 385W x 5 @ 4Ω

AVRs with Pre Outs under $1000USD Retail:

The AVRs listed below are rated at between 90 and 130 watts per channel, but with only two channels driven. When you drive all seven speakers the power output will drop to 25-35 watts.  Every Parasound power amp is rated with all channels driven. A 250 watt Parasound five channel amp sounds far superior to the most expensive receiver and produces 250 watts into each 8Ω speaker and 400 watts into each 4Ω speaker with all channels driven. Even with only one channel driven the AVRs listed below can't produce 200 watts into a 4Ω speaker.  But these AVRs have the same capabilities as higher priced models for HDMI switching and decoding of Dolby TrueHD™ and DTS-HD Master™.

Parasound's message is simple: If you pair one of these AVRs with a Parasound power amp you will have a sensible update path, superior sound and economic sanity.

Are you on a tight budget?  We recommend a separate Parasound two channel power amp to drive the front left and right speakers. It will improve the sound and take a big load off the AVR so it can drive the other channels more effectively.

Glow Audio

Amp One V1.3 Single Ended Pentode Tube Amplifier

(Now also a headphone amplifier)

The iconic Glow Audio Amp One needs no introduction as it is no new upstart, being on the market for years and receiving numerous glowing reviews both professionally and by many happy owners.  The Amp One V1.3 now has a headphone jack and the DAC is now separate (and what a DAC!).

The sound?  We were utterly blown away by the liquid 3D soundstage, layers of detail, bottom end punch, and the sense of spaciousness one does not expect in the sub $1000 category.  With all point to point wiring, Alps volume control, and beautiful build quality this amp is a shoe in for the lovers of flea power.  Matched with the Glow Audio DAC V1.3 (currently included in the price) and any pair of Omegas or Hoyt-Bedford speakers and you would have a system that would embarrass “conventional” systems  several times it’s price.  Glow Audio, continuing the Audio Boutique tradition of alternative audio.
